# Update conversation custom metadata

> Applies a [JSON merge patch](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc7396) to a conversation's custom metadata and
returns the resulting metadata. Keys set to `null` are removed, nested objects are merged recursively, and all
other values replace the existing value. If the conversation has no metadata, the patch is applied to an empty
object. The result has the same size and depth limits as PUT.
